Van Nuys Family Signings: A Checklist When Several People Sign
When a family signs documents together, whether for a shared property matter or a set of matching forms, coordination matters more than anything else. One missing ID or one late arrival can hold up the whole group. This checklist is built for Van Nuys households where more than one person needs a notary at the same time.
Before you book
Count the signers. Everyone whose signature needs notarizing must be present. Write the number down and give it to us when you schedule.
Count the documents. Each person signing each document is a separate notarial act, so a stack of five forms for four people adds up.
Ask the requester what they need. The attorney, agency or company that gave you the paperwork can tell you whether particular certificate wording is required. We cannot choose it for you.
Identification, person by person
Each signer needs valid photo ID that is acceptable for notarization. Lay the IDs out together a day ahead and compare the names with those printed on the documents. If a name is spelled differently on a form, ask the requesting party how to resolve it before the visit, not during it.
Document readiness
Go through every document as a group:
Are all pages included and in order?
Are your own fields filled in, with no blanks left behind?
Are the signature lines still empty?
Is a notarial certificate attached or included where needed?
If any answer is no, set that document aside and ask the requester before we arrive.
Gather everyone at the same time
We can only notarize for people in the room. If one family member is running late, the visit may stretch or need rescheduling. Pick a time when all signers are at home and unhurried. Evenings and weekends are available when scheduling allows.
Prepare the space
A large table or two helps when several people are signing at once. Provide good lighting and a quiet room. If children or pets are present, a separate space makes the process calmer.
Special situations
If a family member is elderly, ill or has limited mobility, tell us when you book so we can plan the setting and pace. The signer still must be willing, must understand what they are signing, and must be able to communicate that to the notary. We cannot proceed if a person appears unable to do so or is being pressured.
During the visit
We verify each person one at a time, complete each notarial act in turn and record each in our journal. Expect a group visit to take longer than a single signing, and do not schedule something immediately after.
After we leave
Keep a copy of each document if the receiving party allows it, and deliver the originals as instructed. We do not give legal advice about the contents or the next steps.
If you are in Van Nuys and several people are signing, send us the counts and your preferred time and we will plan around them.
