What Happens at an Encino Home Notary Visit, Start to Finish
If you have never had a notary come to your home, the process can feel mysterious. In reality, it follows a clear order. Here is what happens, from the moment you book to the moment we walk out the door, for a typical visit in Encino.
The call or booking
You tell us the address, how many people will sign, what kind of document it is in general terms, and when you need us. We may ask whether the document has a deadline and whether the receiving party has given any special instructions. We will confirm what is possible for your timing and location.
Before we arrive
A few minutes of preparation prevents most problems. Have these ready:
The complete document, with all pages and no blanks left in your own sections.
Valid, acceptable photo ID for every signer.
A clean, well-lit table.
A pen with dark ink, if you have one.
Do not sign yet. In most cases the notary needs to watch you sign or have you confirm the signature in person.
Arrival and greeting
When we arrive, we ask everyone to gather so that each signer is physically present. We cannot proceed for a person who is not there. If someone is delayed, we wait or reschedule, since remote participation is not an option for us.
Checking identity
We examine each signer's photo ID and compare it to the person in front of us and to the name on the document. If an ID is not acceptable or the names do not match, we cannot complete the notarization. This is why checking IDs the night before is worth the minute.
Reviewing the document at a surface level
We look at the document to make sure it appears complete and that the notarial certificate is present. We do not read it for legal meaning, explain it or advise you on whether to sign. If it needs a certificate type we cannot choose on your behalf, the requesting party must tell you which one.
The signing and the act
Depending on the document, you may sign in front of us or confirm that the signature is yours. Some documents require an oath. We then complete the certificate and affix our seal where the form calls for it.
The journal entry
Each notarial act is recorded in our journal. For that entry, the signer may be asked to sign and provide details. It is a normal part of the process that protects everyone involved.
After the visit
You take the document and send it to whoever requested it. We cannot promise how the receiving party will treat the document, as that decision belongs to them.
If you are in Encino and ready to arrange a visit, tell us who is signing, the timing you need and any instructions you received.
