Compton Mobile Notary: Prepare Your Paperwork in 5 Steps

2 min read

When a notary comes to your door, the appointment itself is usually quick. The preparation is what decides whether it goes smoothly. If you live or work in Compton and have something to sign, follow these five steps in order.

1. Find out who is asking for the notarization

Someone requested it: a court, a government office, a company, a lender, a school, or an attorney. Find that person or office and ask what they need. Do they want a particular certificate? Do they need a signature in certain places? Our role is to follow what is on the document or what they require. We cannot pick the notarial act or advise on legal questions.

2. Get the whole document

Print all pages if it is a digital file, and check that nothing is missing. Do not sign it yet. A notarization usually requires that the signing take place in front of the notary, so leave the signature line empty unless the instructions tell you otherwise. At the same time, make sure the rest of the document is complete. Blank fields that should hold information can lead a notary to decline.

3. Check your ID

Look at the identification you plan to use. Is it current and in good condition? Does the name match what is printed on the document? If you have recently changed your name, or if your ID shows a different spelling, mention it when you book. We can tell you whether it might be an issue, though we cannot bend the identification rules.

4. Line up everyone who has to sign

If more than one person signs, each must be present and identified. Agree on a time that works for all of them and share the address with us. Think about parking and entry too, since an apartment building with a gate or a business with a front desk needs a heads up.

5. Set up a simple workspace

On the day, clear a flat surface with good light and have a pen ready. A table is better than a lap. Keep the document and IDs together. Put pets in another room if they are likely to interrupt, and keep distractions low so signers can read what they are signing.

What happens during the appointment

We check each ID, confirm the signer understands they are signing and is doing so willingly, watch the signature, complete the notarial certificate, and record the act in our journal. The journal is part of California notary practice, so expect to be asked to sign it as well.

If something is not ready

Sometimes a step is missed. When that happens, we explain what is missing and what you need to do. We would rather reschedule than complete a notarization that does not meet the rules.

Reach out with your Compton location and the type of document, and we will work out timing with you.
